Tonight's beer: Alewerks Grand Illumination (2011)
Deeply bready, lots of caramel, some toast; earthy-grassy-floral bitterness (with traces of pine) woven tightly in. Peat, spice, dark spirits, dried/candied fruits flickering in the distance. Dim impressions of treacle, molasses, maple; vanilla looming overhead. Sweet to start, then gradually bitter and eventually almost dry.
Quite thick, a bit viscous, gently carbonated. A true of boozy warmth, soft and pillowy. Filling and satisfying; a little drying on the back end. Kinda round.
Wow. I can't speak to this beer when fresh, but with a year-ish in the bottle, this beer is incredible: just about at its peak, probably. Intense, and amazingly complex; beautifully balanced and integrated; impressively drinkable, with very little hint of the 10% ABV. I wich I were confident I could find more of this next year. A delicious beer.
