Weyerbacher Insanity

Tonight's beer (complete with suitably blurry pic): Weyerbacher Insanity

Weyerbacher Insanity

Lots of caramel and toast and pale bread, threads of vanilla and butter woven in. Earthy-grassy bitterness arises around the middle, with flecks of peat and wisps of smoke. Then, sweetness re-emerges, lingers a long, long time; gradually dries out some, eventually.

A little thicker than medium-bodied, chewy-soft and a bit sticky, lots of carbonation. Gently drying, with a soft and subdued boozy glow.

I think I remember this beer as being much hotter than this when it's young, but it's been a couple of years (at least) since I've had it really fresh. This is plenty intense, yes, and very complex, but it's not particularly hot to me—it's more supple and graceful and smooth than anything else; nicely integrated and surprisingly close to balanced. Strong enough to be a sipping beer, drinkable enough to make trouble. Superb.
