Southern Tier Un*Earthly

Tonight's beer (in honor of National Stout Day): Southern Tier Un*Earthly

Southern Tier Un*Earthly

Lots of piney-grassy bitterness, with flecks and threads of citrus and flowers. Hints of pepper and spice around the edges. Pale bread in the background, with traces of caramel int he distance. Bitter, then briefly sweet, then a long steep slide to dry. Wisps of musk around the finish.

Maybe a little on the light side of medium-bodied, nicely carbonated. A sizable amount of resinous-syrupy stickiness lasts a long, long time. A bit soft and chewy through the middle, then drying and eventually a lot like refreshing. Very little alcohol presence, especially for 9.5% ABV.

I can't tell if my memory is askew, or if my palate has changed, or if Southern Tier have altered the recipe: Could be all three. Even if this is not exactly as I remembered it, this is still a delicious beer, though I would like to find some very fresh (this is about six months old, and right at the end of its shelf life). In spite of all that, intense and complex, balanced and utterly drinkable.

  1. Southern tier is one of my favorites. I liked its piney-grassy bitterness while I party in weekend with friends. Always got a keg of it from my near liquor store.
