Tonight's beer: Center of the Universe Black Dawn
Opens darkly and complexly bitter: citrus and musk and tropical fruits and pine, wrapped in dark unsweetened chocolate. Flowers and grass, earth and peat and smoke in the distance. Dark bread and caramel and toast lurk, a steady undercurrent. Dries out kinda gradually but thoroughly.
Thick and soft and chewy, nicely carbonated. Lots of resinous-syrupy stickiness, eventually cleansing and drying and surprisingly refreshing. Scarily little alcohol presence, given the 9.2% ABV.
Wow. This is as good as anything else I've had in the style—including stuff like Wookey Jack or the late lamented Grainstorm. Just insanely intense and complex, something a lot like balanced, marvelously well-integrated, giddily drinkable. Another superb beer we grabbed in Richmond—lots of good stuff going on there.
