Tonight's beer: Sierra Nevada Bigfoot 2012
Bread, caramel, and toast; opposed by pine, grass, flowers, and citrus. Dark dried/candied fruits off in the distance, a flicker, then the beer dries out nicely. Something like whiskey emerges toward the finish, with a trace of something buttery over the horizon.
Mouthfeel is kinda thick and bready, a bit chewy and sticky, with lots of carbonation and a bit of boozy warmth. Long and lingering and drying finish. Filling and satisfying and a bit heavy.
A very impressive barleywine, a beer that pretty much defined the American approach to the style. Much more like balanced after like half a year in the bottle than fresh, but still assertively bitter. Intense and complex. Sippable and entirely pleasant. Obviously strong, but graceful.
