Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher 21
Opens with a gust of smoke, then a crescendo of dark-roasty flavors: coffee and dark chocolate, hints of toffee. Vanilla and caramel arise through the middle. Hints of earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness around the finish, dim impressions of burnt fruits and baking spice. Dries out a little bit on a slow and drying finish.
Pretty thick, a bit heavier than medium-bodied; carbonation a little sparse but OK. Lots of syrupy stickiness hangs around for a long time; eventually clears up some. Booze is present, but no real heat.
A big and beautiful stout, so laden with added flavors that it comes across as kinda crazy, at least at first. Holds together well, though (after one's palate comes to grips with it), and it will clearly age nicely (and we have extras, with that in mind). As it is now (very fresh) it's giddily intense and complex, scarily drinkable for such a bit beer. Supple and graceful, with a sizable booze content very subdued.
