Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Bourbon Barrel Quad
Bourbon and cherry characters give a bitch-slap to a fairly mild (if pleasant) Quadrupel. Vanilla, oak, butter, cherries, dominant. Dark bread receding toward background, taking with it dark spices and earthy-grassy bitterness. As with the Sixth Glass, some prominent banana presence, but *way* behind bourbon and cherries. Moderates some as it warms; Quad character comes forward.
Pretty light-bodied, for 11.8% ABV, with substantial prickle I suspect is mostly alcohol (not much visible carbonation in the glass). Aside from the prickle, no boozy heat. Finish is mostly clean, with a touch of syrupy stickiness. Nicely drying, and startlingly refreshing for such a strong beer.
An impressive, thoroughly American (big, boozy) take on a Quadrupel. As it warms, it gets more drinkable, and it's never a slouch at that. Intense and complex and well-integrated. Substantial alcohol carried with astonishing grace. Another winning Smokestack from Boulevard.
