Tonight's beer: Smuttynose Pumpkin Ale

Smells like pumpkins, caramel, toast, spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, etc.), with hints of earth, grass and flowers in the background.
In the mouth, bitterness steps forward a bit—grassy, flowerful, and earthy, with some impressions of pine and maybe citrus. Toast and caramel have receded substantially. Pumpkins still hanging around. Spices almost entirely subsumed in the bitterness, but still hanging on.
Something of an unconventional Pumpkin Ale, for one that's not a stout or something. More bitter than spicy: a beer that tastes different than it smells. Not as cookie like as many, or maybe most. Almost like a Pumpkin IPA. Tons of flavor, even if the pumpkin is a bit ... subdued; complex and intense and nicely integrated.
