Tonight's beer: Avery Eighteen
Smells earthy, kinda funky, with hints of sweat and grass and old fruits. Some distant bread and caramel.
Funk diminishes on the taste buds. Breadiness comes forward, with earthy, slightly-sour/peppery rye character right behind. Grassy hops bracing and balancing. Dried fruits way in the background, with a bit of caramel/toast and maybe some spice.
Medium-bodied, kinda lightly-carbonated. Some light bready-chewiness and stickiness. Not a ton of alcohol presence. A little juiciness in the middle then startlingly dry. Drying and refreshing.
It's complex and borders on funky, and it took a few swallows before my palate came around to what the beer was doing. Rye is a rare and strange flavor in beer. Flavorful and complex—probably more subtle than intense, but it does reward attention paid. A nice beer to mark Avery's anniversary.
