Tonight's beer: St. Bernardus Christmas Ale
Bready-toasty with impressions of chocolate, caramel, spices (cloves, nutmeg, ginger, cinnamon), dark dried/candied fruits (cherries, plums, maybe raisins and figs). Smoke, leather, tobacco, and touches of earthy-grassy-floral bitterness hanging out in the background, with the ghosts of dark spirits like rum and brandy.
Amazingly light-bodied for such a big beer (10% ABV), with an astonishing amount of dense fine carbonation. Smooth, almost like a good wheat beer. The gentlest boozy prickle, a subtle warning of the punch this beer packs. Finish is quick and drying and refreshing.
Wow. No: WOW! Big flavors, balanced and complex. Drinkable just about to the point of slurpable. Amazingly, it's almsot as though they made a Quadrupel more intense and complex. Not a lot of boozy character for its strength. Yummy—a perfect reward for interacting with my dad.
