This afternoon's beer: Samuel Adams Black & Brew
Roasts top and front and center--coffee, then chocolate, then toffee and toasted dark bread, with a distant nuttiness, maybe; earth, peat, smoke/ash, caramel, burnt fruit, grass, spice--all emerge under and behind all the roasts.
Light and bready mouthfeel--not as heavy or as visous as many American stouts--not bad, though--it's plenty satisfying. Pleasantly drying and almost refreshing. Very lively carbonation, without a lot of alcohol presence (which is good, because it's only 5.8% ABV). Pretty smooth.
A very drinkable and balanced coffee stout. Even with Sam Adams set out to be exbeerimental, they still wind up making an accessible and smooth beer. Not crazy-intense or big or bizarre, so it's not likely to win tons of points from the beer-nerd cognoscenti, but it's quite a nice beer. Definitely one I'd buy again, if it were available separately.
