Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Double Wide

Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Double Wide

Pine and citrus rise up in front of grass and flowers, maybe some earth and a little bubblegum and the vaguest hint of bananas. Caramel/toasty/bready sweethess coming right behind. Spice and hints of pepper emerging on the finish--dries out nicely.

The beer is surprisingly light-bodied, with lots of carbonation and a little alcohol prickle--all the warning there is of the 8.5% ABV. Pleasantly drying and veryrefreshing.

Oh, wow, this is a frighteningly drinkable Double IPA, good enough to slurp. Balanced and integrated and flavorful. Complexly hopped, and I suspect there's a little wheat in the grain bill (a la Un*Earthly). If I lived nearer to Kansas City, this would likely be or become my go-to Double IPA. To my palate, hangs with the best I've had in the style. Another big-time winner from Boulevard's Smokestack Series.

EDIT
Further research indicates Boulevard list brown sugar as an ingredient, which probably goes a far way toward explaining the darkness both of the color and of the sweetness, as well as the lightness of the body.
