Tonight's beer: Deschutes The Stoic
Sweetness very much up front--fruits a mixture of light and dark, ranging from bananas to cherries and plums, all candied/dried, with bread bordering on puddingy, and at least a dash of caramel. Vanilla, wood, maybe a little butter; some spice and pepper lingering around the edges. Earthy-grassy bitterness struggling to balance all that sweet, dry things up a little.
The body is right in the middle of medium, bordering on something like light/simple syrup; sticky and a little viscous. Some prickle that's part carbonation and part booze. Some gentle warmth. After a little roundness, drying and surprisingly refreshing for 11% ABV.
A very unusual quadrupel--not much like the archetypes, like Chimay Blue, Westy 12, Rochefort 10, et al., but still recognizable and very drinkable. Lots of complex and subtle things hanging around here. Another yummy big beer from Deschutes.
