Tonight's beer: Goose Island Christmas Ale (2009)
Smells of chocolate, dark bread/toast, caramel. earth, grass, peat in the distance. Dim impressions of fruits and spices. Maybe a whiff of paper.
In the mouth, chocolate transmutes to toffee and nuts, dark bread/toast still a strong presence. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness working to balance; it's a struggle. Maybe a little fruity-spicy-boozy kiss way in the background, with the barest impressions of wet-papery oxidation.
Medium-light body, with decent carbonation, maybe some boozy prickle. Round through middle, very refreshing; finishes pleasantly dry. Kinda cleansing/scrubbing, clean-ish finish, with some bready chewiness and a little syrupy stickiness.
Very nice beer. The hops have likely receded a bit (making me wonder just how hoppy it was) and I think it's oxidized a little. For the most part, it's survived 2+ years in the bottle nicely. Intensely and complexly flavorful, and very drinkable.
