Tonight's Beer: Huyghe Delerium Noël
A scarily drinkable beer, with lots of intense and complex flavor; amazingly well-balanced: Fruits (dried/candied and dark, mostly cherries and plums and raisins) on top of dark bread, chocolate, toast, and maybe a little caramel; floral-grassy-spicy (cloves, cinnamon, ginger) bitterness; some very distant bananas; dries out quickly on finish. Some possible spices and other added flavors well-integrated into the rest of the beer.
Very light-bodied, with lots of carbonation. Some gently boozy prickle, but no other warning of the 10% ABV. Pleasantly drying and almost alarmingly refreshing.
Not so much of a holiday cookie of a beer as winter warmers and suchlike that are more in the English tradition, but very yummy indeed. Definitely a beer that makes celebration easier, possibly to the point of being mandatory. And it has little pink elephants on the label, so it's a win all the way around.
