Tonight's beer: Stillwater/Brewer's Art Debutante

Stillwater/Brewer's Art Debutante

Smell opens with earthy, grassy, spicy impressions, hints of light bread and caramel, maybe a whiff of something fruity; something peppery. Distant possibilities of funk ticking the backmost reaches of the olfactory bulb.

Grassy-floral-earthy bitterness steps forward on the tongue, walking over a bready first impression. Something fruity flashes past, then the beer becomes startlingly dry. Spicy and peppery impressions lurk around the edges, emerging a bit on the finish. Just a hint of rye (or other oddball grain--the label mentions spelt) tartness off in the distance.

The beer is very light-bodied, with lots of carbonation, and is astonishingly drying and impressively refreshing. There's just a hint of something sharp and maybe a little flinty on the quick and clean finish.

A very nice beer, indeed. Probably not the most "authentic" saison in the world (whatever that means, and however much that matters) but very drinkable and refreshing. This beer is impressively complex and intense, especially for ~6.4% ABV, and niftily integrated. I don't have much breadth of experience with either of these brewers (I've had exactly one other beer from each of them) but they're both local, and the beers I've had from them have been very good.
