Tonight's beer: Tröegs Mad Elf
Bready, with hints of toast. Lots of cherries and distinct honey presence. Some caramel, with chocolate and a distinct lick of bananas. Some spice—mainly cloves, I think—lurking aroudn the periphery. Sweet up front then nicely dry.
Light-bodied, with lively sparkling carbonation. A touch of syrupy stickiness, then pleasantly drying. Practically no alcohol heat. Distressingly refreshing.
An alarmingly drinkable beer, for 10.5% ABV. Beautiful in the glass and delicious on the palate. Not as complex as some other Belgian Strong Dark Ales without all the crazy flavor adjuncts—it's really dominated by the home and especially the cherries—but I like cherries and honey. A wonderful beer for wintertime, with no warning at all how strong it is.
