Tonight's beer: Great Divide Hibernation Ale
Bready and toasty, with a touch of butter; dim possibilities of roasts--chocolate more than coffee. Some caramel sweetness; a touch of treacle, maybe; dried/candied fruits--more dark than light, though apples and/or pears are definitely possible. Grassy-earthy-peaty bitterness in the background. A distant impression of smoke.
Mouthfeel is kinda bready and a little thick, chewy more than viscous, gently but adequately carbonated. Some soft syrupy stickiness, and gently drying on finish. More filling than refreshing, with some subtle boozy warmth.
A very pleasant example of the Old Ale style, with lots of complex maltiness and bitterness that doesn't manage balance but does throw the malts into stark relief. Very drinkable--if sippable--with subtle strength. Definitely worth picking up every winter.
