Heavy Seas Black Cannon

Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Black Cannon

Heavy Seas Black Cannon

Waves of bitterness--roasts (chocolate and coffee and maybe some toffee/nuts) tangled up in hops (pine and citrus and flowers and grass). Some bready-toasty-caramel sweetness in the background, providing contrast but nothing like balance.

Mouthfeel is on the light side of medium-bodied, with plenty of carbonation. All the bitterness-roasts and hops--makes this beer very drying; the light body and strong carbonation make it a massively refreshing one. Maybe some dim hints of alcohol prickle. Pretty quick finish.

Lots of complexity here. Black IPA (or whatever one wants to call it) may be a style that started on the West Coast, but Heavy Seas has made a creditable version. Intense and neatly-integrated. Definitely a beer I wish were available year-round. Yummy.
