Ommegang/D'Achouffe Gnomegang

Tonight's beer: Ommegang/D'Achouffe Gnomegang

Ommegang/D'Achouffe Gnomegang

Pears and apples, maybe bananas and golden raisins and other pale fruits--dried and candied--on top of pale lightly-toasted bread. Hints of caramel and/or honey sweetness, but over all the impression is dry. Grassy-floral bitterness flashes past, with some spicy and herbal overtones around the edges.

Light-bodied and highly-carbonated, with some vague bready-syrupy stickiness. Quite drying and immensely refreshing. A little prickle, but no other warning of the 9.5% ABV.

An impressively drinkable beer, with roughly zero alcohol presence. Tons more flavor than aroma, which may be a result of serving it a bit too cold. I have no idea why Ommegang (who printed the labels) put 40F as a recommended serving temperature. The beer definitely seems to improve as it warms. The brewers who collaborated on this beer are similar enough that I'm not sure what working together brought about that they couldn't have managed separately (other than making it easier for Ommegang to get access to both yeasts). Nice name, though, and--some mild mockery notwithstanding--a very good beer.
