Tonight's beer: Widmer Brothers Galaxy Hopped Barleywine (Reserve 2011)
Buttered toast, with darkly-caramelized edges; some fruitiness tossing a little extra sweetness in. Grassy-floral bitterness more than adequate to balance--possibilities of citrus loom. Dim hints of vanilla, spirits (brandy, whiskey, rum) and spices on the horizon.
Light-bodied, with nice, ample carbonation. Some gentle bready stickiness, with touches of resin and syrup. A little gentle boozy warmth/prickle, especially on finish. Pleasantly drying, almost refreshing.
A pretty impressive barleywine. Amazingly drinkable, with only the dimmest hint of the 9.5% ABV. Nicely balanced and well-integrated; intense and complex. Subtle and graceful and very yummy.
