Learning Saturday! Beer #1: Heavy Seas Below Decks (2011)
Malts a bit forward--caramel and toast and toffee making bread pudding on the bread palate--but pretty well balanced by earthy-grassy bitterness with some floral flourishes. Distant possibilities of peat and smoke and dried/candied dark fruits. Some spirits--mostly whiskey-esque--thrown in somewhere. Dries up quickly toward finish.
Bready and chewy and more than a bit syrupy-sticky. Gently-carbonated but still adequately prickly--there's a pretty substantial booze-load here. What drying there is is more than likely from said alcohol. Pleasant substantial warmth; nicely filling.
Not a normal for me to be drinking in the afternoon, but very nice. Surprisingly drinkable for 10% ABV. Definitely a barleywine to buy when I see it, and I'm looking forward to the barrel-aged versions (bourbon barrel and cabernet barrel) that are sitting, patiently waiting their turn/s to be consumed. Intense and complex and very yummy.
