Learning Saturday! Beer #2: Great Divide Old Ruffian
Grassy-floral bitterness front and top and center, with hints of pine and maybe citrus more in the background. Caramel and fruity sweetness making for balance, with hints of toffee, peat, and dried/candied fruits. Maybe a touch of spice (might be spirits), off in the distance. Dries out a lot on the finish.
The beer is on the light-bodied side for a barleywine: It's pretty squarely medium. Not a ton of carbonation, but a sizable boozy prickle and burn on the back of the throat. Plenty drying on the syrupy/resinous sticky finish.
Big and burly and genuinely immense--big hoppy bitterness balanced by big malty sweetness. Very complex and well-integrated. Almost refreshing, and remarkably drinkable, even with its sizable boozy payload (10.2% ABV). I'm always happy to pick this beer up, whenever; it's another winner from Great Divide.
