Tonight's beer: Deschutes Mirror Mirror (2009)
Toast with a little butter, caramel, some fruity sweetness--dried/candied cherries, peaches, plums, raisins--blending in. Floral-grassy-earthy bitterness rising up, attaining something like balance., Maybe some tart cherry impressions way off in the distance--something that might be entirely in my head.
For a big (11% ABV) barleywine, the beer is quite light-bodied and subtle about the booze. Gently carbonated, with a little bready stickiness. Almost refreshing, really, and very satisfying.
A very nice barleywine indeed, which has done very nicely with nearly two years in the bottle. The first one of these I had was clearly infected--tart cherries and red wine vinegar all over--this one isn't. It's yummy as hell. I'm glad we had them in the order we did, not the other way around--the disappointment might have killed me.
