Founders Porter

Tonight's beer: Founders Porter

Founders Porter

Starts off with dark bread, chocolate, and a touch of coffee. Caramel-toasty sweetness is a step behind, with some burnt-fruitiness in the distance. Earth, grass, peat filling in the gaps, impressions of pine, I think, lurking on the perimeter. Typical(ish) porter tang, with minteral touches, comes through on the finish. Long and roasty and rich.

Thick and smooth mouthfeel, with tendencies toward oiliness and stickiness. Roasty-dry--especially on long, almost-syrupy finish. Lots of prickle that I think is mostly carbonation. Not a lot of alcohol presence.

A very drinkable and thoroughly American porter. There's some character--tart in the middle, mineral more on the finish--that I think distinguishes it from a stout; it's more what I'd expect in a porter, anyway. Burly and intense and complex; nicely unified. A winner from Founders.
