Tonight's beer: Samuel Adams Cinder Bock
Smoke flashes past to start, but bready/caramel/toasty sweetness emerges almost instantly, with grassy/earthy bitterness in the background. Dim possibilities of nuts and/or toffee, way in the background, with the vaguest hint of vanilla.
Mouthfeel is bready and almost think, with gentle carbonation. Some syrupy stickiness, finishes softly drying and almost refreshing. Really next to zero alcohol presence, considering the beer's strength--9.4% ABV--just a little warmth in the belly.
Rauchbier or doppelbock? Doesn't matter--this beer does a pretty decent job of bridging the two styles. Not so dominated by the smoke as roughly anything by Schlenkerla (to pick a brewer of very smoky beers) but more than adequately smoky. Remarkably drinkable, and very yummy.
