Butternuts Heinnieweisse

Tonight's beer: Butternuts Heinnieweisse

Butternuts Heinnieweisse

Lemony sour up front. Hints of pale fruits like bananas and pineapples struggling to make themselves known. Maybe a trace of cloves and other spices, and a touch of peppery wheat character. DFinishes kinda dry and puckering-tart. Then the sour lemons come back.

The beer is kinda light-bodied and decently carbonated. Puckering, especially on the finish. Not rough, but there's not as much body as I'd expect to find in a hefeweizen. It does, eventually, finish pretty clean and almost refreshing.

"Almost refreshing" is not high praise for what the brewer calls a "traditional Bavarian hefeweizen." The beer is dominated by a sour/tart lemon character that had me wondering if the beer was infected, but the majority of reviewers online also got the lemon. The wheat character is swamped, lost in a lemon grove. Ick.
