Erdinger Hefe-Weizen Dark

Tonight's beer: Erdinger Hefe-Weizen Dark

Erdinger Hefe-Weizen Dark

Lots of dark, toasty flavors--dark bread, chocolate, toffee, caramel, nougat, nuts, toast--balanced by bright fruits--bananas, mainly, with hints of other tropical fruits (like pineapples) and maybe apples/pears/etc. Spices are typical for the style ad centered around cloves, with touches of allspice, ginger, and others; hints of grassy-floral bitterness blending in, helping the beer dry out some toward the finish.

The beer is light-bodied and silky-smooth, with lots of lively, prickly carbonation. Gently trying and massively refreshing. Really not at all sticky. Some very mild puckering tartness that feels more quenching than anything else.

Probably not the most spectacular example of the style, but solidly competent, and it's a style I like a lot. Complex and nuanced, if not overpoweringly intense; nicely balanced and integrated. Very drinkable.
