Tonight's beer: Green Flash Palate Wrecker
A wall of bitterness falls on my tongue--pine, citrus, flowers, grass--dim earthy and spicy impressions. Some bready/caramel/light-toasty sweetness, joined by some fruity juiciness (which is quickly subsumed by the fruit in the bitter). A flash of something mineral-like flashes past on the short, sharp (and very dry) finish.
For such an intense beer, this is surprisingly light-bodied, with a bit of prickle that could be carbonation, bitterness/hops, or alcohol (or some combination of the three). Very drying, especially on the finish. Some resinous stickiness, but pretty clean and almost refreshing. Other than that little bit of prickle, not a lot of warning as to the 9.5% ABV.
My palate doesn't feel wrecked. Searingly bitter at first, but evolves into something more balanced than that. Massively intense, but ... controlled, I guess, and startlingly drinkable. The bitterness is amazingly complex, built on a fairly simple structure. Very impressive.
