Tonight's beer: Harpoon 100 Barrel Series Black IPA
Dark bread, with hints of dark chocolate, coffee, caramel, and earth/peat; balanced and opposed by grass, flowers, pine, and citrus. Something mineral flashes past on the finish. Dries out impressively. Some very distant spicy impressions.
The beer is very light-bodied, with lots of carbonation. There's a little bready chewiness and resinous stickiness. but overall the beer is pretty clean. Lots of drying happening, between the roast character and the hops (and maybe some alcohol and carbonation) but very refreshing.
An impressively drinkable Black IPA, at a non-imperial strength of 7% ABV. Flavorful, intense, complex, and balanced. The label mentions a hops variety--Ahtanum--I'm not familiar with. I see research in my future, because I'm that sort of nerd. I also see more beers from Harpoon in my future: This is an excellent beer.
