Tonight's beer: Nøgne-Ø Holy Smoke
Caramel up front, some hints of buttered toast, then rich and smooth smokiness suffuses the flavor. Some earthy-grassy bitterness struggles into the middle distance, providing counterpoint more than balance, with peaty and woody hints poking through. It does dry out a little through the finish.
Nice medium body, slightly round through the middle. Decent carbonation, with hints of alcohol prickle--at 6% ABV, it's not strong enough to have much boozy burn. Some bready chewiness and stickiness, on a long-ish finish. Pretty refreshing; gently drying.
A very tasty rauchbier, with smoke well-integrated into an amber/märzen-style lager. This won Nøgne-Ø's annual homebrew competition--clearly this is a homebrewer who knows what he's doing (as do Nøgne-Ø). Very drinkable. If this weren't essentially a one-off, I'd love to get it again and have some with food; I bet it would be awesome.
