Tonight's beer: Ninkasi Critical Hit (2010)
Grassy-floral bitterness at the front, with strong impressions of pine and citrus. Bread/toast, right behind, with hints of butter and booze (mainly whiskey) in the background. Dried/candied fruits way off in the distance, with toffee a vague possibility.
Mouthfeel isn't so much bready as syrupy and viscous, and distinctly sticky, with pretty decent carbonation and a bit of boozy warmth--though there's not as much of that last as one might expect at 11.7% ABV. Some drying, especially on the the kinda sticky long finish, scarily close to refreshing.
There was not way I could pass up a beer that pressed my nerd-buttons as hard as this one. It's a good thing it's a good--very good, bordering on excellent--beer. Not as complex as some other barleywines I've had, but it has tons of intensity, and it's drinkable for days. Nicely integrated, and very yummy. A very good first beer for me from Ninkasi and I'll have to make an effort to get more. it's harder, since they don't have distribution around here; I'll figure something out, I'm sure.
