Tonight's beer: Southern TIer Oak-Aged Un*Earthly
Citrus--mainly grapefruit, but oranges and lemons in there, too--and pine up front, with grass and flowers and maybe perfume right behind: almost blisteringly bitter. Not so much balanced by the malt character--bread, caramel, distant hints of vanilla and maybe butter and a vague possibility of pale non-citrus fruits--as thrown into stark relief. Finish is pretty long, and approaches arid.
Mouthfeel is pretty much medium, with some decent carbonation and a soft touch of boozy warmth. Drying in roughly the same way as a stiff wind off the Gobi; eventually the beer turns out to be something like refreshing. There's very little warning of the 9.5% ABV.
I haven't had many oak-aged IPA-type beers (including doubles and imperials) I've been thrilled by, but this is a pretty awesome beer. Lots of flavor--complex and intense and remarkably well-balanced; very excellent. Another winner from Southern Tier.
