Heavy Seas Below Decks 2011 (Bourbon Barrel Aged)

Caramel and toast on top, with vanilla and butter slathered on; dim and distant dried/candied fruits, adding to the sweetness. Some earthy-peaty-grassy bitterness struggles to make itself noticed. Strong bourbon character—the aforementioned vanilla and butter, definitely, but also some traces of spice. Never dries out more than a little bit.

Syrupy, thick, and viscous mouthfeel, with just a trace of carbonation and substantial boozy warmth that shades toward being heat. Some very gentle dryness on the finish, but mostly satisfying and filling.

A big and burly barleywine, with a ton of bourbon character; lots of malty complexities without tons of bitterness to tip the balance. Pretty well-integrated for all-a-that, though. Strength, all 10% ABV of it, carried with aplomb but not much in the way of subtlety: It's not a beer that's going to sneak up on someone. A marvelous sipping beer, if you like barleywines; I like barleywines, a lot.
