Jever Pilsener

Tonight's beer: Jever Pilsener

Jever Pilsener

Great big whacks of grassy-floral bitterness up front, with some distant pine, sulfur, and catty notes. Some pale malt character—white bread, crackers—struggles forward through the middle, but bitterness reasserts itself on finish. Dry (like the Sahara, or maybe the Gobi) from start to finish.

Very light-bodied mouthfeel, with plentiful carbonation. Very drying, bracing, refreshing. Clean; cleansing almost to the point of being scouring. Finish so quick as to be almost instantaneous.

A bracing—and very drinkable, for all that—German Pils, about as hoppy as is likely to fit into the style. Tons of flavor here—especially given the 4.9% ABV; very direct, without tons of subtleties, but well-balanced and -integrated. Probably my favorite of the German Pilseners I've had.
