Tonight's beer: Mikkeller Bourbon-Barrel-Aged Black Hole
Opens with lots of big, dark-roasted flavors—chocolate and coffee, mostly—backed with toffee and dark-toasted bread. Caramel and honey sweetness arises after that opening salvo, adequate to provide balance. Vanilla-buttery bourbon character blends in through the middle. Dries out a bit through the finish.
The beer is startlingly light-bodied, for a bit stout-esque beer, with what feels like pretty-decent carbonation. Some gentle syruly stickiness; finishes pretty roasty-dry, with the vaguest hint of boozy warmth. Almost refreshing.
Um ... wow. Surprisingly, scarily drinkable big and complex stout, with basically no hint of the 13.1% ABV that lurks within. Intense and complex and integrated and balanced; massive. A seriously amazing beer, another winner from Mikkeller. I was in the mood tonight for a crazy-big-complex stout, and this fit the bill, perfectly.
