Tonight's beer: Sprecher Black Bavarian
Lots of dry-roasty flavors to start—more chocolate than coffee—with toasted dark bread and some caramel right behind. Strong impressions of earth and grass, maybe a touch of pine/flowers. Distant possibilities of nuts and/or toffee.
Light-bodied mouthfeel, with lots of apparent carbonation. Very roasty-dry and very drying; surprisingly refreshing for such a dark beer. Finish is very clean and cleansing. Maybe a trace of boozy tingle.
A very flavorful and drinkable schwarzbier that lives up to its reputation. Intense and complex and balanced, if at 6% ABV a bit big for the style. Another reason to be glad Sprecher has distribution in Maryland, now. Impressive and very yummy.
