Tonight's beer: Boulevard (Smokestack Series) Rye-on-Rye
Bready-toasty-caramel up-front, with whiskey-ish vanilla, oak, and butter overtones; rye character apparent—tart, peppery, a little sour. Earthy-grassy-floral bitterness lingers in the background. providing something that might want to be almost like balance, but falls just a little short. Distant possibilities of spice.
Mouthfeel is a little thick and almost-syrupy, with pretty decent carbonation. A distinct touch of boozy heat, but nothing like what I'd expect, given the 11% ABV. Slightly viscous, especially on the finish; gently drying and nicely satisfying.
Scarily drinkable for 11% ABV; lots of intense and complex flavors, nicely integrated. Pretty much a barleywine made with a greater-than-zero percentage of rye in the grain bill, aged in rye whiskey barrels. Another terrific beer from Boulevard's Smokestack Series. Thanks to +James Peterson for this!
