Tonight's beer: Deschutes Black Butte XXIII
Chocolate, tending toward dark and unsweetened, and dark bread to open, mostly-balanced by earthy-grassy bitterness (with touches of flowers and citrus). Strong impressions of citrus, vanilla and oak flash by, are subsumed by peppery-boozy (pleasant) heat. Spices linger and lurk in the sub-ether, with distant coffee thrown in—especially on finish.
Surprisingly light-bodied for being a 10.8% porter, with ample lively carbonation. Mostly roasty-dry, with some gentle and not-unpleasant warmth (and a peppery heat that accumulates on the palate). A little syrupy stickiness, but otherwise quite clean and unexpectedly refreshing.
A pretty amazing beer, with tons of intense and complex flavors, all very well-integrated, and well-balanced, too. Almost graceful, and very sippable (the accumulating heat does tend to discourage drinking quickly, at least it does me). Reminds me why we make special arrangements to acquire Deschutes beers here in Maryland. Very impressive, and I'm already looking forward to trying the other bottle we have with at least a year on it.
