Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Below Decks (2011, Cabernet-Barrel-Aged)
Lots of caramel-toasty dark bread to start, with some fruity undertones tending toward the vinous (no shock there); non-vinous fruits leaning hard toward the dried. Some earthy grassy bitterness, touches of flowers, lingering in the background. Round and juicy-bready through the middle, then a tad drier; tannic elements emerging toward the finish.
Bready and chewy mouthfeel, with gentle but adequate carbonation. Some distinct but pleasant alcohol presence warming the back of the throat. A little stickiness in the long finish.
An impressive variant on a barrel-aged barleywine, one I think I like better than the bourbon-barrel-aged version of the same beer. Lots of flavor, intense and complex, with the vinous elements nicely-integrated. A great beer for sipping, that practically begs for a good cheese. Yummy.
