Tonight's beer: Heavy Seas Dubbel Cannon
Bitter up front—pine, citrus, flowers, and grass—backed by caramel-toast, dried/candied fruits (tending more dark than light), and spice; the overall impression is very dry. Dim hints of toffee and possibly chocolate lurk in the background.
Medium-bodied or a little bit lighter, with what feels like decent carbonation but may be at least in part some boozy presence. Very drying and refreshing, with a trace of resinous stickiness on the finish.
An interesting amalgamation of styles, a little on the fringes of Belgian IPA: Most of the examples of the style I've seen have taken the "pale" part a bit more literally, with malt characters based on tripels, strong golden ales (think Duvel), or pale saisons; this really toes look and taste (a little bit, anyway) like a dubbel. Plenty of flavor—intense and complex—and all those disparate elements are niftily well-integrated. Very yummy, indeed.
