Tonight's beer: Weyerbacher Seventeen
Lots of fruits to open—citrus, mainly, in the form of orange, lemon, and grapefruit; impressions of apples, pears, apricots, peaches, and pale grapes/muscats. Pale-bready sweethess with hints of caramel and honey. Grassy-floral-earthy bitterness flickering past, leading to a sizzlingly dry, slightly peppery finish. Vague spiritous alcohol emerges from finish to aftertaste.
Pretty light-bodied, with decently lively carbonation. Powerfully refreshing and surprisingly drinkable. Some gentle boozy warmth, but nowhere near what I'd expect given the 10.5% ABV. Thoroughly drying, with a bit of peppery prickle.
An impressively intense and complex and very big saison, nicely balanced and integrated and massively drinkable; the beer becomes all those things more, as it warms. Definitely worthy of Weyerbacher's anniversary beers. Obviously strong, but graceful about it. Should age nicely, I think; yummy even now.
