Tröegs Flying Mouflan

Tonight's beer: Tröegs Flying Mouflan

Tröegs Flying Mouflan

Dark toast, caramel, buttery hints; dark fruits emerge toward middle, along with hints of chocolatey roasts. Some earthy-grassy bitterness struggles to the surface near the finish, with piny and maybe-a-little-citrussy impressions.

Bready-chewy and a little thick, with some decent-feeling carbonation. Really no appreciable alcohol heat. Some tendencies toward soft, slippery, and smooth. Gently nearly-drying; satisfying and softly warming.

A pretty nice barleywine; seems more like an American version with some age (maybe a year?). Nicely balanced and integrated; intense and complex. Just not the borderline-crazy hops character I think I remember, though that might be reputation as much as memory. Very yummy, but not the beer I was expecting.
