Tonight's beer: Bavik Petrus Dubbel Bruin
Dark bread, toast, caramel, molasses; lots of dried/candied fruits—cherries, plums, raisins—melding in, with strong impressions of dark baking spices (mainly allspice and cloves). Some earthy bitterness in the middle. Backbone has a distinctly Flanders-esque sour character, with woody-earthy aspects. Distant vanilla and bright tart fruits.
Just on the light side of medium-bodied, with what feels like a lot of carbonation. Nicely drying and startlingly refreshing for such a dark beer. Flinty mineral hints on the short quick finish.
I think this may be my favorite dubbel, right now. I love the almost-Flemish sour character to it. Amazingly complex and well-integrated, if not necessarily what most people would call "balanced." Astonishingly drinkable. I gather it's hard to find, in some places and at some times; it's worth seeking out, really.
