Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet

Tonight's beer: Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet

Clown Shoes Hoppy Feet

Pine and grapefruit explode out of the glass, with grass and flowers threaded in. Chocolate (the black unsweetened kind) and burnt bread give chase. A shadowy caramel stands stunned in the aftermath, then runs screaming before a second wave as hoppy-roasty bitterness emerges, leaving behind only a dry and blasted land where smoke wafts over a slightly charred bed of spices. Long finish.

A little bready, but solidly medium-bodied, with whta feels like excellent carbonation. Drying and refreshing, in spide of distinct resinous stickiness on the finish. Maybe a vague hint of alcohol heat.

A nicely drinkable—if quite assertive—black IPA, with tons of intense, complex flavor. Very well-integrated, and what passes for balanced in the style (bitterness balanced by more, or at least different, bitterness). Makes for a nice introduction to Clown Shoes, a brewery I hadn't had yet but one I'd heard a lot about (most of it good). I want more: from this brewery; of this beer. Yummy.
