Heretic Shallow Grave

Tonight's beer: Heretic Shallow Grave

Heretic Shallow Grave

Chocolate and coffee on dark bread, with hints of toast and caramel. Earthy-grassy-peaty bitterness melts into the roasts. Dark dried/candied fruits emerge through the middle, pulling something vaguely tangy/sour along for the ride. Traces of smoke and ash emerge as the beer slowly dries out on the long finish.

Bready-chewy and a bit thick; lots of roasty-dryness. A bit sticky into and through the finish. Maybe a faint boozy glow. Drying, filling, satisfying, smooth.

Nice! I didn't know anything about the brewery or the beer, but I'm impressed by this. On the big side for a robust porter; intense, complex, integrated, drinkable. All kinds of bitterness, with just enough sweetness to throw the bitterness into stark relief. Definitely a brewer—or at least a beer—I need to look into acquiring more of.
