New Belgium Lips of Faith Cocoa Molé

Tonight's beer: New Belgium Lips of Faith Cocoa Molé

New Belgium Lips of Faith Cocoa Molé

Chocolate—dark, unsweetened chocolate—blends with dried peppers; I'm not an expert in such things, but it tastes a lot like my jar of ancho powder smells. Maybe some grassy-herbal-earthy bitterness, and a dim possibility of caramel. There might be a trace of something sour-ish on the back end, before the finish dissolves into a slow burn.

Light-bodied, with a fair amount of burn that's probably an amalgam of capsaicin and alcohol. A little syrupy stickiness, and lots of drying.

I suppose I can see some of the flavor resemblance to a molé negro—dark chocolate and smoked hot peppers—but a good molé negro is rich and complex, and this beer isn't, really. There's the chocolate, and the peppers, and that's about it. Clearly I was expecting something other than the beer I got. Oh, well.
