Tonight's beer: North Coast Old No.38 Stout
Dark toast and coffee and chocolate front and top and center; dry from the start. Hints of caramel, bread, and very-dried fruits (almost burnt) emerge through the middle, then fade as earthy-grassy bitterness appears and merges with roasty bitterness, dragging an ashy aftertaste behind.
Pretty light-bodied, with what feels like good carbonation; lots of roasty dryness. A little stickiness on the finish, but mostly clean, and surprisingly cleansing and refreshing for a stout.
A very drinkable more-or-less-basic stout. Nothing fancy, no fruits or lactose or other adjuncts; only a moderate amount of booze. Solid. Plenty of flavor: intense, complex, integrated, balanced. One of my favorite non-imperial stouts, though I don't have it anywhere near enough. Very excellent, indeed.
