Tonight's beer: Silver City Fat Woody
Smells of smoke, peat, vanilla and spice, with dark bread and caramel as more of an undertone. Some hints of earth and grass in the background.
Dried dark fruits come first on the tongue, backed by caramel and toast; the smoke and peat, spice and vanilla in the nose step back a bit but are still very present. Earthy-grassy bitterness—impressions of something almost like tea—emerges toward the finish. Starts quite sweet but dries out a bit by the end.
Mouthfeel is kinda thick and bready-chewy, with decent if somewhat soft carbonation. A bit of syrupy stickiness on the nigh-eternal finish. Filling and satisfying, without even a trace of alcohol presence: no heat, nor burn, nor prickle, nor tingle.
Definitely a sipping beer, with a finish that calls to mind an Everlasting Gobstopper (it goes on and on and on and on ...). Big and surprisingly sort, iwth absolutely zero warning of the 9.2% ABV. Intense and complex and well-integrated; an oak-inflected malt-bomb, and a very pleasant one. A nice version of a Wee Heavy; it hits most of my hot-buttons for the style (and it's one I like a lot).
