Tonight's beer: Elysian Dragonstooth Stout
Coffee, chocolate, dark bread; caramel present but a step or three back, with threads of toffee and/or nuts. Earthy-grassy-smokey-peaty impressions occupying the background. Maybe a little dark spirits, like whiskey, rum, and brandy, off in the distance; a possibility of maple or molasses. Never overly sweet, but still dries out a little by the finish.
Thick and dense and bordering on slick, with gentle, fine carbonation. Roasty-drying, with a bit of bready/syrupy stickiness on the finish. Just a touch of boozy warmth. Pretty clean; gently warming; very satisfying.
A very impressive biggish oatmeal stout: plenty burly, but subtle and complex. Lots of intensity; nicely well-integrated. Plenty of oatmeal slickness, and overall incredibly drinkable. Pretty sure this is the first beer I've had from Elysian; this makes me look forward to the couple pumpkins beers I just picked up. Very nice.
